Letting off some…

Today, LONE SURVIVOR is coming out on Steam, for Mac and PC.

It’s normally priced at $9.99 / £6.99, but it’s 20% off for the first week!

So if Steam’s your platform of choice, and you’ve been waiting for news, or just for the first official sale – well, here it is!

Now, the other thing that’s special about this release of the game, is that it’s NOT LONE SURVIVOR.

That’s right!

It’s LONE SURVIVOR v1.1 CODENAME: RED!

What does this mean???

It means:

  • Allows ESC to quit from the title screen or game over screen
  • Hunger increases 10% slower
  • Stealth movement 10% faster
  • Thinman patrol pause shortened
  • Red ending ‘officially’ added (although will be extended in LS:YELLOW later in the year)
  • Red ending requirements changed
  • Blue / red path ranks made more difficult
  • A few more contributing factors added
  • A new logo and icon
  • Tweaked art in the basement / ground floor to remove pure black pixels
  • Removed glitchy pixels from the side of the ammo store
  • Tin of pickles now has a description
  • Elevator upstairs gives message if powered
  • Save game is cleaned up: all traces of the old system removed
  • Save game no longer creates a Flash Shared Object except for volume settings
  • Numerous typos corrected
  • ??? won’t trade unless you’ve met him
  • ???’s name only appears once you’ve met him
  • Map hints disabled if not carrying the correct map
  • Some small, secret mechanic changes, mostly fixes
  • Some re-balancing to mental health-dependent descriptions
  • Can opener room door made a tiny bit clearer
  • The cat works

  • And these things are fixed:

  • Mac black screen issue no longer an issue
  • Panic attacks disabled in the boss sequence (which could rarely cause a corrupted save)
  • Fixed bug where it was possible to re-trigger the elevator sequence
  • Fixed bug with text boxes not reverting to interactive mode on game completion
  • Fundamental engine changes in cutscene / dialogue handling:
  • All world and object descriptions now have the player non-interactive
  • Last-resort freeze check & correct for scripts that don’t return control
  • Tweaks to the way sprites allow player interaction when simulating hotspots (solves the freezes related to positioning)
  • Cat / doll / stove / Gamejoy / bucket / hospital door freezes fixed by the above methods
  • Rare slowdown issue fixed (related to AIR system chrome setting, now disabled)

  • First Aid Edition Limited Run

I’d also like to announce that I’m winding down the First Aid Edition.  It’s coming close to 200 purchases, which after tax, fees and so on gives me a good chunk of time to work on freeware work.

So I’ve decided to make it a limited edition run of 200.  The game will be removed for sale after that.

My reason is that it looks as if the game will enter profit now, and I don’t want to be greedy and ask more money than I need to survive.  I really appreciate all the support the First Aid customers have shown, so thankyou to each and every one of you.

One of the things I plan to do with this time is to flesh out LS3D a bit more, and release it to the public as freeware.

I’ll print 250 art cards in the next couple of weeks, and sign and mail the 200 out, keeping the others back for special occasions and replacements for lost ones.

    And finally…

I just wanted to say thankyou to everyone for playing the game and sharing your thoughts.  It’s been so great to hear from you all, in blogs, comments, emails and so on.  I’m so glad people seem to like the game and I keep being surprised at the reviews and things that come in.

    – Jasper

Love this game! One thing that made this so awesome for me was the MUSIC. especially the music that plays in your apartment. Great job on setting the mood with that.

One nitpick though: When the monsters kill the player they should eat him or drag his body off the screen or do SOMETHING! Having them just stand there doesn’t look too..scary. In fact it looks dumb. Like those retro games with a time limit where you just fall off the screen for no apparent reason when the time runs out, instead of whatever terrible thing you were expecting to happen (like an invincible ghost showing up) and then the time limit doesn’t seem so threatening anymore.

ANYway. Hope you’ll do another, longer, game in the same style!

Will Lone Survivor be receiving any (more) updates than newer endings? Newer items? features? Characters?

If there is a volume control, it is not mentioned in the control list, nor has it responded to any button I have pressed. If you are going to make a statement like that, how about not being an ass and SAY WHAT IT IS.

Please add a volume control. My friend bought me a copy of this, so that we could play it together while in Steam chat. The game sound is too loud. I cannot hear what my friend is saying!

      I loved this game,
I only wished it was longer, but it was the best game I’ve played in a while.
      Hope you make more.

Ok Steam keys will definitely be possible, and I have set up the new email address. I just need to find a suitable way to provide the DRM-free alternative, and I’m looking into several alternatives there. As soon as I have that last piece of the puzzle, I’ll announce the email address and what to put in the subject line to get your chosen version. You’ll just need your order number handy.

Thanks again for your patience with this.

May I humbly suggest looking into something like what Puppygames has installed (http://www.puppygames.net/steam/) if you’re still looking for a way to distribute the Steam keys? Not entirely sure as to how it works but it might be worth a shot. 🙂

Thanks it may not be as far off as you guys think – its just that, as always, I feel it’s better to only announce something when it’s 100% confirmed and all the potential questions have answers! Hence the very long last post, above.

You know, when I saw this was on steam, my first emotion wasn’t positive. I desperately looked for a CD Key in my FastSpring emails so I could claim my copy on steam (if it’s not on my steam account, I forget I own it). After my search failed, I wandered to this website feeling pretty cheated until I read the top news article. I definitely appreciate the honesty. I think any consumer does more than any business, big or small, realizes. I can appreciate the massive load of effort that you are undertaking Jasper, and I thank you for working to help us early adopters out.

I came here expecting the same old run around, and now I’m more than happy to wait. Don’t rush on my account and thanks for working so hard to help us!

      p.s. I would definitely be A-Okay with a steam key 😀

      @ScorpionWasp
He was referencing how the ending is in the game now, but will be expanded upon in the Yellow update which is coming at some point in the future. After the yellow update, the Red ending will be finalized, hence the quotes around “officially”.

I’m happy to know that one of my favourite games is having a lot of success. Keep up the good work, your fans will be waiting patiently for anything new. Good day.

Awesome. Good news indeed. I like all my games being in one place. Truth be told, if you hadn’t done this, when I got some extra change, I would have rebought your game. It’s a fantastic experience and I can’t tell enough people about this. So few devs deserve this type of attention because they turn out junk and call it games. INDIE DEVELOPMENT FOREVER!

Congrats on getting the game on Steam! And I’ll say, their Top 10 is looking pretty nifty right now…

I’ll wait patiently for our update. In the meantime, I’ve already told all my friends to check it out on Steam. They always complain that survival horrors today are bad, so I think they’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Yes! It’s always been there, now it’s just clearer.

      @everyone

Thanks for the support, I’ll definitely bring the game to GOG if they’re interested. I am also looking at other store-fronts, which support updates, so more news on that very soon.

Also, I’m adding a new section to this blog post with more details about how I’m going to make the update happen…

You really should submit your game to GOG.com. This way, you keep the drm-free aspect for people who are not fond of steam, you get another distribution channeland and don’t have to care so much updates (like the last update of Legend Of Grimrock which is already available on GOG).
